An independent study by Dr. Michée Lachaud — an agricultural, environmental and resource economist associated with Florida A&M University — has linked pre-harvest sugarcane burning to a 10.8% increase in physician-diagnosed asthmas cases. That's a significant number, yet the scope of the problem is likely much larger since many cases go undiagnosed. This alarming evidence comes as Congress is debating Big Sugar's outdated, generous protections in the Farm Bill. Private sugar companies have received decades of government handouts — shifting the cost of the federal sugar program to consumers like you — as industry giants like Florida Crystals and U.S. Sugar wield undue influence over lawmakers. The Farm Bill is being negotiated right now, and Dr. Lachaud's findings create new urgency to remove Big Sugar's outdated, unjust  protections.
